VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS is the visually spectacular new adventure film from Luc Besson, the legendary director of The Professional, The Fifth Element and Lucy, based on the ground-breaking comic book series which inspired a generation of artists, writers and filmmakers.

In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha—an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other.
There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.

ALPHA

An ever-expanding metropolis where species from across the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence, and culture.

valerian

A classic hero, kind-hearted, strong and brave, Major Valerian has a sixth sense for tactics and is an extraordinary warrior. He makes a huge effort to follow his superiors’ orders to the letter and is determined to go as high and far as he can in his military career.

Laureline

With her superior intelligence, determination, and independence, Laureline has been Major Valerian’s partner for 2 years. She undertook her first real assignments in the field with him, and they have a 100% success rate. They form one of the most prominent partnerships in the human army.

bubble

Bubble is a Glamopod, a polymorphous extraterrestrial species, with a mysterious agenda.

PEARLS

A peaceful, holistic race of people who live in harmony with the elements. The Pearls are fishermen who give back to their planet as much as they take from it.

MELO

The last living specimen of its kind, a Mül Converter, has the ability to ingest any reasonably sized object and replicate it hundreds of times. It can come in very handy during missions and negotiations.

K-TRON

The combat androids, commissioned by Alpha’s Council of Elders, serve as the police force on the City of a Thousand Planets.

The Anti-Riot Force is durable, unstoppable and extremely precise. K-trons have a reputation for ruthless efficiency.

A light on the robot’s head offers two responses to any given issue: blue means “move”; red means “target elimination.”

With concentrated cobalty armor, they are practically indestructible.

Doghan
Daguis

They always travel in groups of three. Their ancestry shows this tactic was purely a self-defense mechanism to help spot trouble before it spotted them.

But over time, this strategy seeped into the species’ genes and Doghan Daguis now come into the world as triplets whose brains are connected and thoughts are shared.

Part of their genetic makeup is to divide their sentences into three parts. If one triplet goes missing or dies, the information is incomplete and meaningless. All three must be present for it to make sense.

Speaking 1200 extraterresterial languages and over 500 computer languages, they wield an extreme amount of influence on Alpha, The City of a Thousand Planets.

IGON
SIRUSS

Igon Siruss is Kodhar’Khan, born in 2690 on Karkos, a small, inhospitable moon orbiting planet Kirian in Dimension 2.

Igon is already the most-feared pirate in the galaxy, and the humans’ most wanted criminal, when he comes face-to-face with Valerian and Laureline.

He is the galaxy’s public enemy number one.

Kortan
Dahük

The Kortan Dahük are humanoid extraterrestrials from planet Kas-ônar, an intergalactic paradise with three suns.

Kortan Dahük are famously sensitive to music and sounds. They invented "sound sculptures" with a variety of purposes in mind, such as long-distance communication, healing or space travel. The beauty of sound sculptures stems from their practicality being powerfully linked to their musicality. The Kortan Dahuk are as interested in what the sound produces as in what sound is produced.

Kortan Dahük admire Humans because, apparently, human sound sculptures are curiously "attractive." That's how Kortan Dahük came to be the first extraterrestrials to make contact with the human race. Their experience of meeting other species and their wise and peaceful attitude mean they are rapidly accepted. For the same reasons, they soon become Alpha's greatest ambassadors. A large number of species settle on Alpha thanks directly to the Kortan Dahük.

Omelite

Omelites are scrawny individuals with outsized heads and long, dangling arms. The surface of their native planet, Of'Posco, is permanently buffeted by photon storms and covered by unstable electromagnetic fields, so the atmosphere is rich in electricity and so-called "transmitter waves," whose closest but still distant equivalent on Earth would be wifi.

The Omelites are expert programmers and have developed a society based on advanced information technology. Their species has no predators and has almost complete control over its planet.

When they arrive on Alpha, the Omelites offer to update the humans' IT systems, which they find defective and obsolete. The World Science Council agrees to their gargantuan overhaul proposals and the Omelites have been responsible ever since for IT development and maintenance (using their laser beam eyes to weld parts). They keep Alpha at the cutting edge of technology and security.

AZIN MÖ

The Azin Mö from planet Nojima are intergalactically famous for their extraordinary cellular materialization abilities. In other words, they can produce any organic cell and so have the gift of spontaneous regeneration. They also have the ability to "teleport" (although they actually travel by splitting in two), but they require several days to recover from each trip, during which time they are physically and mentally feeble, which makes them paradoxically vulnerable.

The species' astonishing gifts are counterbalanced by moments of extreme vulnerability. Over the centuries, they have been a favorite target of mercenaries and space pirates seeking to usurp the species' powers.

The Azin Mö are Alpha’s official doctors, heading up every field of medicine. Their medical skills and peaceable nature make them one of the most popular species on the city of a thousand planets.

BROMO-
SAUR

Bromosaurs are enormous creatures that graze on the seabed of their native planet, Blaafarn. With short legs and mammoth jaws, they can survive for extended periods in suitable conditions. Their respiratory system filters water and expels it in purified form from an orifice on top of its head that is similar to a whale's blowhole.

This purification process attracts a very fragile animal with exceptional sensorial powers, the Mylea jellyfish, which clamps onto the bromosaur because it needs highly purified water to survive. In return, the jellyfish, which can read minds, enables bromosaurs to communicate as if they are logged onto a huge computer network. The two species have lived in complete harmony for centuries.

BOULAN
BATHOR

The Boulan-Bathor from planet Goara have developed a society centered on food and the gastronomic arts. Goara is one of the lushest, most hospitable planets in the galaxy. Its mild climate and lack of parasites and predators make Goara ideal for agriculture. Since the dawn of time, the Boulan-Bathors' history has been linked to harvests and crops. To keep their sensitive palates stimulated, they have become experts in transforming their homegrown produce into delicious feasts.

The Boulan-Bathor (or the alphas of the species, at least) have genuine ambitions and a sense of entitlement that perfectly complement their business sense. They are never slow to use their economic influence to ensure that the right political decisions are made, particularly in terms of preserving their monopoly and elitism, which are the foundation stones of Boulan-Bathor society.

MEGAPTOR

Megaptors (AKA the “Kirian Devils”) are reptilian creatures from planet Kirian in Dimension 2. They are carnivores protected by an impervious carapace of scales and have claws which can slice the most resistant metals.

But these aren’t the only reasons why megaptors are incredible predators: they are also able to disconnect their nerve endings while chasing a prey, making them insensitive to pain and tiredness. Even mortally wounded, they will keep chasing their prey until they have absolutely no resources left.

In spite of the danger megaptors represent, some criminals dream of owning one for their personal use. But only the most ruthless and ferocious can domesticate such a creature.

Comic
Book
Origin

The series, created by pierre christin and jean-claude mézières, debuted in the anthology magazine pilote in 1967.

The comics’ premise is that a galactic empire based in the 28th century protects all of time and space. The two lead characters, Valerian and Laureline, are time-traveling space agents partnered together to defend the universe. They encounter many alien cultures and dangers in the course of their adventures, all of which are illustrated by Mézières.

Valerian ran for 43 years, with the series being collected into 21 volumes.

The series will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year coinciding with the feature film’s release in july 2017.

LUC
BESSON’S
CHILDHOOD
DREAM
COMES TRUE

Ever since he fell in love with the comic at 10 years old, Luc Besson has dreamt about Valerian and Laureline. More than 45 years later, he is finally bringing his childhood dream to life.

The director behind the professional, The Fifth Element and Lucy said:

“I wanted to make this film years ago but I had to wait for the technology to catch up with my imagination.”

“Jean-Claude Mézières, who is the creator of valerian, worked with me on the fifth element, and he was asking me all the time, ‘why don’t you make Valerian?’ and I always said ‘I can’t. There are only 10 or 12 human characters in the comic series. Everyone else is an alien.’”

“When I saw avatar that’s when everything changed for me. I knew from that moment on the possibilities were limitless.”

THE INTRUDER

The spaceship piloted by Valerian and Laureline allows them to travel anywhere in space and time.

From the outside, the wear and tear of the vessel shows just how many missions the partners have embarked on together and how many close calls they’ve survived.

In the film, the ship is equipped with an onboard supercomputer called Alex. With a sense of humor and full-fledged personality, it is Valerian and Laureline’s unofficial third partner. Alex's voice is represented by a red light on the interior of the ship while it assists the duo in every mission.

The intruder was referred to as “astroship xb982” in the comic series. It debuted in 1969 in “the great collector”.

With the additional support of rodeo fx, these top three vfx studios behind such films as avatar, the lord of the rings, avengers: age of ultron and lucy, are charged with bringing luc bessons’ vision to life.

In 1997, Luc Besson’s the Fifth Element had 180 vfx shots. In comparison, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets has 2,734.
